After the nomination form of Congress candidate Nilesh Kumbhani was rejected, Mukesh Dalal of the BJP was declared an uncontested winner from the Surat seat as all other candidates withdrew from the fray. In Gujarat, even before the polling started, there was already one seat in the BJP kitty. The State President of the BJP, CR Paatil, has set an ambitious target of repeating the outstanding performance of the previous election by winning 26 out of 26 seats in Gujarat.
Now, the Union Home Minister and No. 2 in the Government, Amit Shah, is leading by 329156 votes by his nearest candidate, Sonal Patel of Congress in Gandhinagar constituency. Amit Shah has got 421424 votes at the time of writing. whereas Sonal Patel has secured 92268 so far. By the time the counting ends, Amit Shah is likely to be the winner with the highest lead in India, crossing over 9 lac votes.
The capital of Gujarat, Gandhinagar, is a prestigious seat for the BJP. BJP patriarch LK Advani used to contest and win from the constituency. In that sense, Gandhinagar is producing home ministers for the Union of India.
