Cat owners in Ahmedabad will soon be required to register their pets, following the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s (AMC) completion of pet dog registrations by March 2025. From January 1 until the end of March next year, the civic body will focus on registering pet dogs and in April, attention will shift to cats.
This move aims to accurately count the number of pet cats in the city and help control rabies, as well as identify foreign-breed cats that could carry diseases. Ahmedabad has reported 2,226 cat bites this year.
While there are an estimated 50,000 pet dogs in the city, the number of pet cats is unclear.
According to AMC officials, after the dog registration period concludes, mandatory registration for cats will begin.
An AMC official explained that “the Gujarat Provincial Municipal Corporations Act, 1949 requires all domestic animals, including dogs, to be registered and a license is necessary to keep a pet dog.”
Following a detailed study of pet dog ownership, the AMC set up an online registration system, which will be extended to cats as well.
On December 12, AMC issued a public notice informing pet dog owners that they must register their dogs on the official website for a fee of Rs 200. An offline registration option is also available at the Cattle Nuisance Control Department (CNCD) office and the same system will be used for cat registrations.
Requirements to Register Your Cat
Similar to dog registration, cat owners will need to provide a photograph of their pet, along with copies of their Aadhaar or voter ID, a tax bill and an electricity bill.
The AMC is developing an app for pet registrations, allowing owners to upload details such as their name, pet breed and vaccination certificate. The app will also support cat registrations, allowing owners to pay fees and download their registration certificates.
