AMC’s Special Treatment for Retired Bureaucrat at Kalhaar Exotica Society

| Updated: June 21, 2024 15:20

Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has found itself embroiled in a heated dispute after it was revealed that it plans to provide a Narmada water connection exclusively to one member of the Kalhaar Exotica Society in Sola, despite the society comprising a total of 150 members.

The move by AMC to grant this “special” water connection has sparked outrage among the residents of Kalhaar Exotica. The corporation has commenced digging the TP road within the society to facilitate this connection, a decision that has not gone down well with many members. The caretaker of the society, Sanjaybhai, was reportedly taken to the police station and threatened in relation to this issue.

Criticism has been directed at AMC for allegedly surrendering to pressure from a single influential figure, identified as retired IAS officer P Paneervel, who is said to have pushed for this exclusive water connection. The decision has been denounced as unjust and unfair to the remaining 149 members of the society.

Among the grievances raised by the residents are concerns over the lack of equal treatment and transparency in the allocation of water connections. Residents argue that it is discriminatory to grant a connection to one member while denying others the same privilege.

Furthermore, the excavation of the society’s road by AMC has been met with opposition, with residents highlighting the inconvenience caused during monsoon season and the additional burden of road maintenance falling on the society itself. The residents assert that the road infrastructure, which has been developed by society, should not be handed over to AMC for the benefit of a single individual.

Despite efforts by the society to appeal to the Commissioner for individual water connections for all members, the decision to provide an independent Narmada water connection to P Paneervel has been viewed as a violation of democratic principles and a disregard for the interests of the broader community.
