In seeking to recycle waste into usable means, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation will be taking up a project to convert 85 tonnes of discarded betel nut (supari) into fertilizers.
The pilot phase will focus on the wastes at Pirana landfill. The AMC’s solid waste department has dug holes at the dumping site and buried nearly 85 tonnes of supari. The land was filled again with cow urine used as the watering agent to cement the loose dust firmly back.
A novel concept indeed, the project took off owing to concerns by the civic body’s officials. “A trader approached us saying that he wished to discard 85 tonnes of supari at Pirana. The crop was rotten and could not be sold. We thought of checking with our garden department experts and were told that supari needs to be composted to make organic manure,” shared an AMC official.
Wasting no time theron, the AMC took to burying the discarded supari. “Cow urine is regularly sprinkled on the pits to ensure the process does not dry up,” he added.
The organic fertiliser will be ready in 120 days and used as manure at public gardens. \
