In Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s (AMC) costliest road makeover project so far, the 3.6-km stretch from Chandkheda’s Visat Circle to Zundal Circle is set for a revamp. This stretch is being redeveloped to make it an iconic entry point into the city.
Known as north Gujarat’s gateway into Ahmedabad, the stretch links the Sardar Patel Olympic Sports Enclave near Motera to sports facilities on the Bhat-Koteshwar stretch. Moreover, Ahmedabad’s largest mall is planned near Zundal Circle.
On the cards is a complete overhaul of the road as well as the public utility features. According to AMC sources, modern street lighting, a green street, street furniture, an elevated, cobblestoned walkway, cycle tracks, two-way service lanes and a pergola are part of the project. These account for Rs 41 crore of the cost.
This project’s total estimated cost of Rs 61.14 crore is more than the CG Road redevelopment project (Rs 34 crore) and the ongoing Ashram Road project (Rs 36.86 crore).
The elevated walkway will use granite cobblestones to ensure that it is safe and slip-resistant. There is a five-year guarantee for the road. However, costly features like the street furniture and lighting come with only a one-year defect liability period, the sources said.
Other road stretches being redeveloped
The other road stretches being redeveloped as entry points into the city are from Shantipura Chowkdi to Sanand Chowkdi via Cadila Circle, the stretch from Naroda Muktidham to Dehgam Junction, the road from SP Ring Road to Mumatpura, the stretch from Pakwan Junction to Keshavbaug near Judges Bungalows and the the Airport VIP Road from Airport Circle to Dafnala.
At present, the Airport VIP Road is undergoing upgradation by AMC in a public-private partnership (PPP) model. A private contractor is handling the cost of street furniture, including advertising rights.
