The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has suspended of all boating and water sports activities at Kankariya Lake, a popular attraction of Ahmedabad city. The River Cruise operations at the Sabarmati Riverfront have also been temporarily halted. The suspension will remain in effect until a new contract, which includes safety measures proposed by the high court, is finalised.
The city police commissioner’s office has requested the AMC to provide details of the new contract, which incorporates enhanced safety measures, to boating operators. The letter specifies an immediate halt of boating activities if the contracts remain unsigned. In response, the Kankaria Lakefront office has urged Khodal Corporation to temporarily cease boating and other water sports activities at the lake.
This decision comes in the wake of ongoing proceedings of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the Gujarat High Court. The PIL was initiated following a tragic boating incident at Harni Lake in Vadodara. The next hearing is scheduled for today, with the government required to submit an action taken report regarding the matter.
It is worth nothing that on April 20, the state home department directed the collectorates of Ahmedabad, Kheda, Dang, Devbhumi Dwarka, Sabarkantha, Mehsana, Bharuch, Narmada, Surat and Bhavnagar to inspect all 18 sites where boating activities are ongoing. They were instructed to suspend activities and provide a detailed report to the home department in case of any deficiencies. This move underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety of citizens participating in water sports activities.
