The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) sealed Fairfield by Marriott Hotel’s kitchen in Ahmedabad on Monday after an insect was found in the soup.
The hotel could not produce pest control documents which led to the seal. This incident highlights the non-compliance among the city’s restaurants regarding food safety rules.
A diner allegedly found an insect in the soup ordered on March 31. Sources in the health department of AMC said a team searched the hotel in Usmanpura after receiving the complaint.
No documents
The hotel was unable to produce mandatory documents including pest control and medical fitness certificate from the health department, said sources. The civic body has told the hotel management that the seal would be opened only after it produced the documents.
AMC sources said that the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, has made it mandatory for restaurants to conduct periodical pest control. However, about 80% to 90% of the restaurants in Ahmedabad do not comply with the rules and are unable to produce the certificates when asked.
