Vehicles are liable to pay vehicle tax even if they are registered outside municipal limits, according to Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) sources. Now, the new rule that makes Aadhaar a mandatory document for vehicle registration is helping AMC gather data and crack down on owners defaulting on tax.
Over the last two years, AMC has identified over 30,673 such vehicles and their owners have been issued tax notices. This crackdown has resulted in a recovery of Rs 67.51 lakh in tax till date.
Online registration and tax payment system is enhancing vehicle tax collection efficiency, say AMC officials.
Specific areas
To intensify vehicle tax collection efforts, AMC has identified specific areas bordering the city limits, including Shela, Godhavi, Manpur, Kamod, Bakrol and Koteshwar. Most of the vehicles under AMC’s radar are those within a 5 km band around the city.
According to the Gujarat Municipal Corporations (GPMC) Act, AMC has the authority to collect vehicle tax from any vehicle regularly used within city limits, irrespective of its registration location.
Vehicle owners who have received notices can settle their dues online or by visiting any AMC zonal office. Owners can claim exemption if they can prove that the vehicle is used solely within their village or local area.
During the 2021-22 financial year, AMC issued 14,183 notices and recovered Rs 24.63 lakh in tax due. The following financial year 16,493 notices were issued for recovery of Rs 42.88 lakh in due tax.
