The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has published a list of its 192 elected municipal councillors from all the 48 wards on its website.
The list details name, gender, caste and sub-caste of the councillors, apart from their wards and contact details.
Shockingly, some of the caste and subcaste names appearing on the list are prohibited caste names, instead of constitutionally approved caste categories such as scheduled castes and scheduled tribes.
For Pratibha Jain, nominated to be mayor recently, her caste is mentioned as Hindu Jain and deputy mayor Jatin Patel’s caste is mentioned as Hindu Kadva Patidar.
Similarly, the castes and sub-castes of many councillors who are from SC and ST categories have been mentioned on the list using prohibited caste names.
The caste and sub-castes mentioned are not limited to Hindu councillors. For Muslim councillors, their sub-communities such as Saiyad, Chhipa, Shaikh, Sipahi and Ghanchi have been mentioned.
It is surprising that castes and sub-castes of councillors have been included on a list meant for the public to know their councillors by their work.
All citizens need to know is how to get in touch with their elected representatives so that their civic problems are addressed, where mention of caste or sub-caste is redundant.
