Former global CEO of Reckitt Benckiser, Rakesh Kapoor, has donated a sum one-million-pound sterling (equivalent to Rs 10 crore) to his alma mater Birla Institute of Technology & Science (BITS) Pilani. The announcement was made today at the BITS Global Meet that is currently under way in Jaipur. According to BITS vice chancellor Souvik Bhattacharya, this is the single largest donation the institute has ever received. “The gift will be used to fund the creation of a state-of-the-art Centre for Innovation,” he said.
Rakesh Kapoor,64, graduated with a degree in Chemical Engineering from BITS Pilani in 1980 and went on to do an MBA from XLRI, Jamshedpur. He joined FMCG major Reckitt Coleman India (Dettol, Harpic, Strepsils, Mortein) in 1987, before its merger with Benckiser, serving in various roles including Regional Sales Manager for North India. He served at global CEO of the company in London from 2011 till 2019.
According to a BITS Pilani press release, the new Centre for Innovation will be named after Mr Kapoor. The 40,000 sq feet facility It is being designed by Hafeez Contractor. The Kapoor Centre for Innovation will be home to the Pilani Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development Society, the business incubator of BITS.
