Gyanvapi Case: Allahabad HC rejects Muslim side’s pleas challenging suits seeking restoration of the temple

| Updated: December 19, 2023 11:46

On Tuesday, the Allahabad High Court dismissed all petitions filed by the Muslim side, challenging the Hindu community’s request to worship at the Gyanvapi mosque in Varanasi. These five petitions were submitted by the Uttar Pradesh Sunni Central Waqf Board and Anjuman Intezamia Masjid Committee.

The focal point of the petitions revolved around the ownership dispute between the Gyanvapi Mosque and the Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi. Specifically, the pleas contested the validity of an ongoing civil suit in a Varanasi court, which seeks the restoration of a temple at the current location of the Gyanvapi mosque.

In its decision, the High Court rejected two petitions questioning the admissibility of a 1991 civil suit initiated by Hindu worshippers and three petitions challenging the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) survey order.

As part of its ruling, the High Court directed the Varanasi court to conclude the hearing of the case within the next six months.
