Carlos Alcaraz, the Spanish wonder kid, all of 21, has won the coveted Wimbledon 2024, beating the indomitable Serb Novak Djokovic. Alcaraz has the honour to have won all grand slam trophies now.
Currently ranked No. 3 in the men’s singles by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP), Alcaraz has had the distinction of becoming the youngest world no. 1 at the age of 19 years, 4 months, and 7 days on September 12, 2022.
Carlos Alcaraz did the unthinkable by defeating the legendary Novak Djokovic 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) in straight sets in a match that lasted 2 hours and 27 minutes on the Centre Court at Wimbledon. With the win, Alcaraz also crashed the dream of Djokovic to equal the great Swiss Roger Federer’s record of winning eight titles at the grass court.
Alcaraz was defending his title win last year against Djokovic in the final that ran almost 5 hours. He is now the first Spanish tennis player to win back-to-back Wimbledon titles and the fourth in the world to win 4 Grand Slams at the age of 21 or under. Others who accomplished this feat earlier are Mats Wilander, Bjorn Borg and Boris Becker.
Though the youthfulness of the champion was handy with him, the 24-time grand-slam winner’s brilliance was in evidence when, at 4-5, 0-40, Djokovic not only saved the points but broke Alcaraz’s serve to eventually take the set into a tie-break when Alcaraz had earned himself 3 championship points.
Alcaraz proved his dominance in both types of courts after winning his second major trophy in quick succession after winning at Rolland Garros last month. Novac Djokovic suffered a torn meniscus at the French Open and had to undergo an operation in Paris earlier last month.
The final at All England Club was attended by numerous celebrities, notable among them was the Princess of Wales, Kate Middleton, who made a rare appearance since the news of her being treated for cancer came out.
