Ajay Devgn’s upcoming film Maidaan, a period sports drama based on the golden era of Indian football, has finally got a release date. The film, which was delayed due to the pandemic, will hit the theatres on April 2024, coinciding with the festival of Eid. However, the film will face a tough competition from Akshay Kumar and Tiger Shroff’s action comedy Bade Miyan Chhote Miyan, which is also slated to release on the same day.
Maidaan, directed by Amit Ravindranath Sharma and produced by Boney Kapoor and Zee Studios, features Ajay Devgn as Syed Abdul Rahim, the legendary coach and manager of the Indian football team from 1950 to 1963. Rahim is credited with leading the team to victory in the Asian Games of 1951 and 1962, and is regarded as the architect of modern Indian football. The film also stars Priyamani, Gajraj Rao, and Bengali actor Rudranil Ghosh in pivotal roles.
The makers of Maidaan shared the new poster and release date of the film on social media on Sunday. Film critic Taran Adarsh tweeted:
Bade Miyan Chhote Miyan, on the other hand, is a remake of the 1998 film of the same name, starring Amitabh Bachchan and Govinda. The new version, directed by Ali Abbas Zafar, features Akshay Kumar and Tiger Shroff as the lead pair, along with Sonakshi Sinha and Prithviraj Sukumaran. The film is a comedy of errors, revolving around two lookalike pairs of cops and criminals. The teaser of the film was released on 24 January, and received a positive response from the audience.
Both Maidaan and Bade Miyan Chhote Miyan are expected to be big-budget entertainers, catering to different genres and audiences. It will be interesting to see which film will emerge as the winner at the box office on Eid 2024.
