Air India to Buy 100 More Airbus Aircraft, Expanding on 2023 Deal

| Updated: December 9, 2024 20:33

Air India has announced its decision to add 100 more Airbus aircraft to its historic fleet of 470, which was established in 2023. On Monday, the airline confirmed that it had placed an order for 100 additional Airbus planes, comprising 10 widebody A350s and 90 narrowbody A320 Family aircraft, including A321neos.

These 100 new aircraft are in addition to the firm orders for 470 aircraft that Air India had already placed with Airbus and Boeing last year. Additionally, it has selected Airbus’ Flight Hour Services-Component (FHS-C) to support the maintenance requirements of its growing A350 fleet.

On the purchase, Tata Sons and Air India chairman Natarajan Chandrasekaran said, “With India’s passenger growth outpacing the rest of the world, its significantly improving infrastructure and an aspirational young population increasingly going global, we see a clear case for Air India to expand its future fleet beyond the firm orders of the 470 aircraft placed last year. These additional 100 Airbus aircraft will help to position Air India on the path to greater growth and contribute to our mission of building Air India into a world-class airline that connects India to every corner of the world.”

“I am glad to see Air India renew its trust in Airbus with this additional order for both our A320 Family and A350 aircraft,” said Guillaume Faury, CEO of Airbus, who personally witnessed the impressive rise of the Indian aviation sector in recent months. “Through this continued partnership, we are committed to supporting the success of Air India’s “Vihaan.AI” transformation plan under Tata’s vision and leadership.”

Air India has already received six A350s from Airbus and currently has 344 new aircraft coming in total with the contract for 100 more. In 2023, Air India also ordered 220 narrowbody and widebody aircraft from Boeing, of which 185 are still awaiting delivery.

With the most recent purchase, Air India has increased its overall aircraft order with Airbus from 250 in 2023 to 350, which includes 40 A350 and 210 A320 Family aircraft.

The new materials and maintenance contract will help Air India maximise the performance and reliability of its A350 fleet, since Airbus offers full engineering services and integrated component services, including on-site stock in Delhi.
