Ahmedabad’s business hub SG Road is on the radar of several central probe agencies but for a very different reason from what these are usually associated with.
Over the past few years, enquiries have stacked at the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) from central agencies looking for AMC plots to set up their hubs. A plot worth Rs 104.56 crore has recently been allotted to the Directorate of General of Goods and Services Tax Intelligence.
Another plot worth Rs 66.83 crore has been allotted for the construction of the Customs Commissionerate office.
Inquires have started to pour in from the Enforcement Directorate (ED) office, which too is hunting for a permanent address on SG Road. Thus, in a short time, the new address of the prestigious central government agencies will be SG Road. “AMC plots for DGGST and Customs has been finalised, while ED, IT, and DRI are also expected to set up offices on the SG Road,” said a senior AMC official.
In the standing committee meeting held in March 2024, a proposal to allot plots to two government organizations for Rs 240.93 crore was approved. “In these proposals, AMC allotted 3,819 sq m of land near Sola-Hebatpur to the Customs and Excise Commissionerate at a rate of Rs 1.75 lakh per sq m,” added the AMC official. Next to this plot, is the 3,974 sq m plot allotted for Rs 69.54 crore to the Khadi Gramodyog Board office.
Earlier, in the standing committee meeting held in Feb 2024, a resolution was passed to allot 6,495 sq m of land in Gota TP Scheme near SG Highway to the Directorate of General of Goods and Services Tax Intelligence, Ahmedabad Unit at a rate of Rs 1.61 lakh per sq m for Rs 104.56 crore.
Apart from this, ED officials recently contacted AMC and requested for allotment of a plot on SG Road .
Another AMC official on condition of anonymity, said, “Ten years ago, AMC allotted land to various central govt agencies to build staff quarters. An AMC plot in Naranpura was allotted for CAG staff quarters. Apart from this, plots have been allotted to agencies including Income Tax and Customs and Excise in Naranpura for the construction of staff quarters.”
