Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar have introduced their ambitious plan to host the 2036 Summer Olympics, with the estimated costs ranging from Rs 34,700 crore to Rs 64,000 crore.
Named ‘Review Meeting – Preparedness towards Amdavad 2036’, this document was presented in Gandhinagar this week during the brainstorming session of the high-level coordination committee concerning the Olympic bid.
The final blueprint, which was reported by a national newspaper, outlines the anticipated costs associated with bringing this major sporting event to the twin cities of Gujarat as well as four additional cities—Bhopal, Goa, Mumbai, and Pune—comparing the potential expenses with those of previous Olympic Games.
The financial outlay is divided into: the Organising Committee for the Olympic Games (OCOG) budget, which involves the organising costs, and the non-OCOG budget, which covers infrastructure and operational costs for the host city, the paper reported.
The highest projected OCOG budget for Ahmedabad surpasses even that of the Paris 2024 Games, underscoring the scale of their ambitions. Nevertheless, the review highlights that there is a good potential to optimise the cost budget for the event.
The estimated OCOG budget for the city ranges between Rs 18,600 crore and Rs 41,100 crore. This includes operational costs, involving transportation, accommodation, technology, workforce and temporary infrastructure.
The review document, according to the news report, claims the OCOG budget for London 2012 was Rs 22,449 crore, Rio 2016 stood at Rs 16,461 crore, Tokyo 2020 reached Rs 21,425 crore, and
Paris 2024 was Rs 32,765 crore. Los Angeles 2028 is projected at Rs 43,633.
With Ahmedabad furthering its position as a potential Olympic host, the city is driving sports infrastructure projects valued at over Rs 6,000 crore, which will proceed regardless of the success of the Olympic bid, it has been reported. These projects are aimed at bettering health and recreation facilities, positioning Ahmedabad as an international sports destination.
