The Cyber Crime Branch of Ahmedabad City has recently made a breakthrough by recovering 92 lost mobile phones and returning them to their rightful owners.
PSI Ketul Modi of the Cyber Crime Branch revealed in a conversation with ‘Vibes of India’ that, “Over the past few years, numerous mobile phones have been reported lost or stolen in various areas of Ahmedabad city. These incidents were recorded in different police stations across the city. Leveraging this data, the Cyber Crime Branch has successfully recovered approximately 92 mobile phones, valued around 9.20 lakh rupees and initiated proceedings to return them to their original owners.”
Modi further stated, “Most people do not expect to get their lost mobile phone back. However, through technical investigation, the Cyber Crime Branch has managed to locate these mobile phones. Our sole intention is to return the mobile phone to its original owner. So far, we have returned mobile phones to 52 people.”
Interestingly, some of the recovered mobile phones were quite expensive. Owners who had given up hope of retrieving their valuable mobile phones were pleasantly surprised upon their return.
One such case involved a young man employed in a large private company. He had lost his company-provided Apple iPhone, worth about one and a half lakh rupees. The responsibility of the loss fell on him, causing much worry. However, after lodging a complaint about the loss at the city police station, the Cyber Crime Branch investigated and found his expensive mobile phone. The young man expressed his relief, stating, “I did not hope to get my phone back.”
When asked how mobile phones are typically lost, the police often hear common stories from people using lost mobile phones. Some say that an unknown person, claiming a relative was ill in the hospital, sold them the mobile phone. Others found the phone on the road or bought it from a shopkeeper who had repaired it.
If your mobile phone is lost or stolen, it is advised to contact the police station in the area where the mobile was lost or stolen. The police station records details such as the complainant’s name, mobile number, IMEI number and the circumstances of the loss. The Cyber Crime Branch then uses this data to conduct a technical analysis, communicate with the user of the phone and retrieve the mobile.
