A shootout in the Nehrunagar area of Ahmedabad has left a vegetable vendor fighting for his life. Badaji Marwadi was shot by an unidentified person on Saturday evening. His condition is reported to be critical.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (M Division), A B Valand, confirmed the incident. “The shooting occurred on Saturday evening while Marwadi was at his stall near a Jain Derasar, along the road from Nehrunagar to Manekbaug,” he said.
Marwadi sustained serious injuries and was immediately rushed to Jivraj Mehta Hospital. His family, who were also at the hospital, have yet to provide details about the motive behind the attack.
According to eyewitnesses, the shootout involved two people riding a motorcycle. One of them started firing. Workers at Marwadi’s shop attempted to apprehend the person, but he escaped.
“In order to identify the attackers, we are now examining CCTV footage from surrounding shops and locations,” Ellisbridge police station inspector B D Jhilariya stated.
“Last year, Marwadi’s brother was murdered,” a senior police official stated. “We have also learnt from our initial inquiries that there was an attempt on Marwadi’s life last month too.”
An old family rivalry may have been the cause of the attack, the officer continued. The situation will become clearer once the FIR is filed, which will determine if the victim had received any threats.
