Following a successful trial run, Ahmedabad police have set up AI-based CCTV cameras at 130 of the 737 locations planned in the city to to detect and prevent crime more effectively.
These cameras can monitor and analyse video footage to discern traffic patterns and anomalies. They can predict and help prevent traffic congestion.
Ajay Choudhari, Joint Commissioner of Police (Special Branch), stated that under the Nirbhaya initiative, the AI CCTV cameras are designed to detect 18 types of criminal activities and send real-time feeds to the police control room.
The monitored activities include crowd gatherings, unauthorised loitering, fire detection, vehicle interception, abandoned objects detection, face recognition, camera tampering, chain snatching, presence of visible weapons, monitoring of vulnerable women, suspicious male activities in designated women areas, and various other suspicious behaviours, effectively each doing the job of 10 policemen.
“The feed from AI trained cameras are also streamed to computers of senior police officials and also on the personal computers of inspectors of each police station. The feed is also sent to their mobile phones so that they can monitor the law and order situation from their offices. Such cameras will be needed soon as election campaigning and propaganda would start soon. Such cameras will also help us during VVIP movement and election rallies,” said JCP Choudhary.
One instance involved a photo taken on Ankur Road around 5:07 pm on March 1, showing a man standing near a woman at a bus stand. The AI camera detected the situation and sent the feed to the Police Control Room (PCR), priming police to respond swiftly if necessary. Another example on Judges Bungalow Road involved the AI camera monitoring traffic flow and alerting traffic personnel to prevent a potential jam.
Choudhary said this was just the beginning, and more cameras under the Nirbhaya initiative would be installed and made active soon.
