Ahmedabad Police Restricts 24-Hour Shifts for Officers, Introduces 8 & 12-Hour Rotations

| Updated: October 29, 2024 14:43

The Ahmedabad Commissioner of Police, G S Malik, has introduced new regulations to end the practice of 24-hour shifts for police personnel, mandating instead that officers work in 8 or 12-hour rotations.

According to Malik’s directive, drivers of police vans, Police Control Room (PCR) vehicles, and duty staff will now operate on shorter shifts. Previously, some police stations in Ahmedabad allotted 24-hour shifts, allowing personnel the following day off, a system deemed to be detrimental to officer welfare.

The circular specifies that drivers and other staff working with the first and second mobile units, prisoner transport, PCR vehicles and other police vehicles must adhere to an 8-hour shift standard, extending to 12 hours only in emergencies. Malik further instructed supervisors and officials to report any cases where personnel work 24-hour shifts, stating that disciplinary action will be enforced against those who do not comply.

Ahmedabad’s 50 police stations currently face staffing shortages, with only 50 of the 125-150 authorised officers available as mobile unit drivers and PCR personnel.
