The city police have announced the permanent closure of an 800-metre stretch of road from Batrisi Bhavan to Cargo Motors, following a request from the Sabarmati Ashram Redevelopment Project. The closure aims to support ongoing restoration and redevelopment efforts at the historic ashram.
The official notification, issued by In-Charge Police Commissioner and Additional DGP Ajay Choudhary of Special Branch, outlines that the Centre and the state government are jointly overseeing the Sabarmati Ashram’s restoration. The Sabarmati Ashram Memorial Trust has been established to manage this large-scale redevelopment project.
To enable the redevelopment process, the road connecting Batrisi Bhavan on Ashram Road to Cargo Motors will be permanently closed. In response, an alternative route has been set up to facilitate travel between Subhash Bridge Circle and Vadaj. Commuters are advised to use the 132-feet Ring Road from Subhash Bridge Circle towards Ranip Bus Stand, where they can turn left onto a new road leading to Cargo Motors and the Riverfront West Road.
Choudhary informed the media that the road closure comes after a formal request from the Mahatma Gandhi Ashram Restoration and Redevelopment Project to accommodate new visitor facilities at the Ashram. “The road will be closed from Friday midnight,” Choudhary confirmed.
The notification warns that anyone violating the road closure will be subject to prosecution under various laws.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had unveiled the masterplan for the Gandhi Ashram Memorial and Precinct Development project on March 12.
