Ahmedabad Metropolitan Court Sends Filmmaker Avinash Das To One-Day Police Remand

| Updated: July 20, 2022 20:00

Filmmaker Avinash Das was sent to one-day police custody by Ahmedabad Metropolitan Court. He will appear in court tomorrow at 2.30 p.m.

According to an official, Gujarat Police arrested filmmaker Avinash Das on Wednesday in connection with sharing a photo of Union Home Minister Amit Shah with arrested IAS officer Pooja Singhal on Twitter.

Das was apprehended from his Mumbai home by an Ahmedabad Crime Branch team on Tuesday and brought here in the early hours of Wednesday.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the crime branch stated that it had found another tweet posted by Das that appeared to be offensive and could have hurt Hindu sentiments.

Das attempted to convey in a satirical manner in the Hindi tweet, which was mentioned in the release, that he cannot give up alcohol because Gods such as Brahma and Ram reside in various types of liquor, such as whiskey and brandy.

Das directed ‘Anaarkali of Aarah,’ starring Swara Bhaskar, Sanjay Mishra, and Pankaj Tripathi, in 2017 and ‘Raat Baaki Hai,’ in 2021. He also directed the Netflix series ‘She.’

The Ahmedabad Crime Branch had filed an FIR against the filmmaker under Section 469 (forgery) of the Indian Penal Code, as well as provisions of the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act and the Information Technology Act after he posted another photo of a woman wearing the national flag on his Instagram and Facebook accounts.

The FIR was filed against Das, 46, in June after he shared a photo of Singhal, who had been arrested in a money laundering case by the Enforcement Directorate, whispering something to Shah.
