A 40-year-old man was sentenced to death by a city sessions court on Tuesday for the brutal murders of a man and his mother in the Odhav area of Ahmedabad on June 2, 2017.
The motive behind the killings was the accused’s alleged illicit relationship with the victim’s wife
Additional Sessions Judge B.B. Jadav delivered the verdict against Baldev Chauhan for the murders of Kanchan Modi and her son, Vipul Modi. The judge described Chauhan’s actions as “inhuman act for his illicit relationship,” and further emphasised that “his heinous act could not be described in words.”
The court said the crime was the “rarest of the rare” and sentenced to be hanged till death.
In its ruling, the court clarified that although its intention was not to intimidate, it has a solemn responsibility to hand down the severest penalties when warranted, in order to deter wrongdoing and maintain the integrity of the legal system. The court also stated that it should exercise its judicial power to award the maximum punishment to control those who engage in heinous and inhuman acts.
According to details, “Chauhan worked as a compounder and was in a relationship with Vipul’s wife. The woman’s family heard of the affair after that she was sent to her parents’ house, in Maharashtra on May 29, 2017
Infuriated by this, Chauhan went to Vipul’s residence on the evening of June 3, where a fierce confrontation with Kanchan ensued, resulting in her brutal murder with an axe. As Chauhan tried to hide her body and destroy evidence of the crime, Vipul, Kanchan’s son, arrived on the scene.
Chauhan also struck Vipul with the axe, claiming his life as well. He then wrapped the bodies of both victims in a plastic bag, abandoning the scene and escaping under the cover of darkness the next morning.
The victims’ bodies were found three days after the crime occurred. Chauhan was taken into custody by Odhav Police on June 7, 2017, in connection with the incident.
He was charged with murder and destruction of evidence during the trial. He was found guilty by the court on both charges.
