Summer is already upon us. Ahmedabad sizzled with a maximum temperature of 37.5 degrees celsius on Thursday, 6.7 degrees higher than normal. This was the highest temperature for a February day in seven years.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) database, since 1990, the hottest February day in Ahmedabad was 37.8°C in 2015. The mercury has not breached that mark so far. The only time it crossed 37°C was in 2017, hitting 37.3 degrees. The city’s maximum temperature on Thursday surpassed this.
Many see this as a sign of the summer heat to come. Barring 2014, when the month’s maximum temperature was recorded on February 7, since 2012 all February maximum temperatures for the city have been recorded on or after February 19.
The minimum temperature on the other hand was 13.6 degrees, which was 1.1 degrees lower than normal. Thus, citizens experienced a 23.9-degree difference between day and night temperatures.
Bhuj on Thursday recorded a maximum temperature of 40.3 degrees – becoming the state’s first weather station to breach the 40°C mark this year. Seven weather stations recorded maximum temperatures of 38°C or more on Thursday, the majority of them in the Kutch and Saurashtra regions.
