Ahmedabad Crime Branch, early this morning, arrested Teesta Setalvad and will present her in court while seeking a 14-day remand for her. She has been booked for her involvement in a new case of forgery, criminal conspiracy, and insulting criminal proceedings to cause injury. The Gujarat ATS detained social activist, Setalvad in Mumbai on Saturday from her Juhu home. She was then taken to the Santacruz police station for an FIR filed against her at the Ahmedabad crime brancḥ. Crime branch inspector D B Barad, while lodging the complaint, accused her and two former IPS officers of forgery, criminal conspiracy, and instigating criminal proceedings to cause injury, among others.
Deputy Commissioner of Police, (DCP), Crime Division, IPS Chaitanya Mandlik, held a press conference and took questions from the press. He said that their department had filed an offense because of the Supreme Court’s June 24 ruling. On Friday, the top court dismissed a challenge brought by Zakia Ehsan Jafri that contested the SIT’s closure report and threw out claims of a bigger plot involving high-ranking officials and other parties in the Gujarat riots of 2002, which followed the Godhra train massacre.
DCP Mandlik also said that along with Setalvad, RB Srikumar and Sanjeev Bhatt are also accused in the complaint. RB Srikumar has been arrested as well, he said, adding that the process of bringing in Sajeev Bhatt is underway.
Furthermore, DCP Mandlik said that his branch was conducting the investigation but Setalvad was not cooperating. Evidence will be gathered to probe where the accused have gone wrong. Everyone accused will be under probe. Finance, documents, and other details will be investigated.
