A local court in Ahmedabad has sentenced Imran Sharif Sheikh Moshin, also known as Bakra Farid Sheikh, to seven years in prison for cow slaughter. The ruling was announced on Monday and welcomed by Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghavi, who described it as a “historic decision”.
Sanghavi took to social media to express his support for the verdict, stating, “We stand firmly for cow protection! Salute to the holy cow! A historic decision by the Ahmedabad court. In Gujarat, we don’t just arrest cow killers; we fight until they are convicted! Imran Sharif Sheikh Moshin, aka Bakra Farid Sheikh, has been sentenced to seven years in prison!”
Sanghavi emphasised Gujarat’s dedication to cow protection and highlighted the state’s legal framework. He said, “Gau Mata is the biggest centre of our devotion. The Gujarat government, under the leadership of then-Chief Minister Narendra Modi, was the first to introduce a stringent law against cow slaughter. Gujarat is a state where crores of people have deep devotion toward Gau Mata, and it is our duty to protect her. The Bhupendra Patel government not only arrests cow slaughterers one by one but also ensures they receive strict punishment by consistently following up on cases, rather than just filing them and letting the accused get bail.”
The minister also pointed out that this was the third cow slaughter conviction in Gujarat this month. “Yesterday, an Ahmedabad court delivered a historic judgment, sentencing cow slaughterers to seven years in prison. I would like to congratulate the Gujarat government, the police department, and the legal department,” he added.
Public reactions on social media showed support for the government’s efforts.
One user commented that cow slaughter cases had increased between 2007 and 2012, with little action taken. They alleged that the then Congress-led central government provided support to the accused, but noted that the current government has ensured strict legal consequences.
The first cow slaughter conviction in Gujarat occurred six years ago, when a sessions court sentenced the accused to 10 years in prison and imposed a fine of Rs 1.02 lakh for slaughtering a calf and preparing biryani from its meat.
