Congress leaders have demanded that the state government take strict action against those responsible for the death of cows at Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s (AMC) shelter for cattle at Panjarapol. Party leader Shehzad Khan Pathan, accompanied by Nagji Desai of Maldhari Mahapanchayat, visited the shelter and reviewed the situation. The party has claimed that the death of the cows was caused by negligence from the AMC staff. As such, the Maldhari community has now filed a complaint regarding the matter with the Sarkhej police, who have begun an investigation.
This news comes after local cowherds alleged that around 20 cows died in the Panjrapola shelter on Sarkhej Bakrol Road, which is run by the AMC. Recently, a video that showed cows kept in cages and in a filthy environment at the said shelter went viral on the internet. Netizens started questioning AMC’s action regarding the same. Opposition parties too have taken notice and demanded an explanation for the death of the cows.
Responding to the claims by the opposition leaders and the netizens, Bharatiya Janata Party Standing Committee Chairman Hitesh Barot said only six cows had died in last week and that too because of sickness and emaciation.
The AMC shelter currently has 1200 cows. The civic body gets hold of stray cattle and brings them to sheds in different areas. The owner of the cattle is required to claim the animals within a certain period of time.
