Ahmedabad, Gujarat: A builder named Yogesh Gupta, accused of rape and absconding for a year, has been apprehended by the Cyber Crime Branch of Ahmedabad. Gupta, 55, was hiding in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, disguised as a temple priest to evade capture.
The charges against Gupta stem from a 2023 case where he allegedly raped a woman involved in an affidavit scandal defaming two high-ranking IPS officers. He was initially identified under different names and locations but ultimately traced through technical assistance.
Gupta faces rape charges under IPC sections 376, 365, 366, and 34. He is also accused of various other crimes registered at different police stations in Gujarat.
What was the whole case?
The case began in February 2023 when the woman, initially only identifying the perpetrators as Ismail Malek and a senior police officer, filed a rape complaint. The investigation, transferred to Ahmedabad Police, revealed the crime occurred at Chandkheda’s Sangath Bungalow, leading to the arrest of Malek.
Further investigation unearthed a larger conspiracy involving five individuals, including two journalists and a BJP leader, who allegedly fabricated the rape accusation to extort money from the IPS officers. Gupta, identified as the manager of Sangath Bungalow, became a prime suspect.
Escape and Capture:
Despite being summoned by the Women’s Crime Branch, Gupta evaded questioning and went into hiding. After months of searching, the Cyber Crime Branch, using technical means, located him in Mathura disguised as a priest. He was subsequently apprehended and handed over to the Women’s Crime Cell for further legal action.
