While a public interest petition is being heard in the Gujarat High Court regarding the pollution of the river Sabarmati, the municipal commissioner has ordered the sealing of 78 industrial units. The units run in violation of pollution norms were operating in the Narol area of Ahmedabad. They did not have the required permission of the Gujarat Pollution Control Board and the Municipal Corporation. The units were found releasing polluted discharge and chemical-infected water in the passing sewage line of the municipal corporation during the night, taking advantage of the darkness.

The decision came during the weekly review meeting chaired by Ahmedabad Municipal Commissioner M. Thennarasan, IAS for discussing the Prevention of pollution in river Sabarmati. All Deputy Commissioners, Assistant Commissioners and the Commissioner himself are assigned the responsibility to implement the standard operating procedure for stopping the release of effluents in the sewage line of the Municipal Corporation.

It was reported during the meeting that 78 industrial units in the Narol area were operating without the permission of the Gujarat Pollution Control Board or the Municipal Corporation. The Municipal Commissioner instructed to take action against all the units violating the norms and preventing the release of chemically contaminated water
.
Similar action had been taken against the industrial units running in other areas including Narol and Danilimda earlier too. However, the sealed units were found reopened after some time. In the review meeting, all the sewage treatment plants owned by the municipal corporation in the city were asked to examine the capacity, inlet and outlet etc. and submit a report.

PIL-98-2021 is being heard in the Gujarat High Court regarding the pollution caused in the Sabarmati River. The corporation has set team-wise duty from 19 July to 16 August from 6 am to 2 pm, 2 pm to 10 pm and 10 pm to 6 am for all deputy commissioners. Five security bouncers at each location and fire staff working at Maninagar, Jamalpur, Thaltej, Chandkheda and Bhopal fire stations with their vehicles will have to be on shift duty while dealing with industrial units in South and East zones.

A common effluent treatment plant of 30 million litres per day capacity was constructed at Behrampura for the industrial units around Narol, Danilimda and Bahrampura.
