Ahmedabad: Artist Rupesh Shah’s Solo Exhibition ‘Journey’ Opens at Samara Art Gallery

| Updated: October 9, 2024 16:41

The Samara Art Gallery is hosting a solo exhibition by renowned artist, entrepreneur and social advocate Rupesh C. Shah, titled ‘Journey’. The exhibition, inaugurated on October 2, 2024, is open to the public from October 3 to 6, offering a unique glimpse into Shah’s artistic evolution and his tribute to the enduring message of Mahatma Gandhi.

Speaking to Vibes of India, Rupesh Shah shared the inspiration behind the title of his exhibition, explaining that his return to painting after a 65-year hiatus reflects his personal journey. “I was a good painter during my childhood days, but my grandfather urged me to focus on my studies, as painting was not seen as a profitable career. For 65 years, I worked as a businessman. At the age of 65, I came across a book called Ikigai, which talks about passion and purpose in life. So, I decided to resume my hobby of painting. Today, I am 72 and what I learned throughout this journey is displayed here in the exhibition,” Shah explained.

Shah’s art is deeply rooted in his family’s legacy of Gandhian philosophy. His grandfather, Chandulal Chhaganlal Shah, was a close associate of Mahatma Gandhi, often painting portraits of the leader. Many of these works are now housed at the Gandhi Ashram. Shah’s artistic inspiration stems from his family, especially his grandfather’s depictions of Gandhi and his aunt’s efforts to preserve the family’s artistic heritage.

“I grew up sleeping in the same bed where Gandhiji used to sleep,” Shah recalled. “Naturally, I have inherited the Gandhian philosophy and the paintings here reflect that. The exhibition starts with Gandhiji and ends with Gandhiji,” he said.

While the exhibition pays homage to Gandhi, it also features a broad spectrum of artwork inspired by nature, spirituality and Shah’s personal reflections. Of the 50 paintings on display, only a select few focus on Gandhi, with the majority depicting other subjects. These include scenes from the Himalayas, Varanasi and abstract works like Rhythm of Nature and Sky Abstract, showcasing Shah’s versatility and depth as an artist.

The ‘Journey’ exhibition invites viewers to experience Shah’s interpretation of the world, offering a visual narrative that encourages reflection on personal values and connections with the environment. His works artfully combine traditional Indian influences with contemporary techniques, creating a dialogue between the past and the present.

Rupesh Shah has served as president of the Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry for two years, led the Ahmedabad Pottery Manufacturers Association and is a trustee of Aadarsh Ahmedabad.
