Art gallery 079 Stories is in trouble. The Ahmedabad-based studio and art space organised a two-day event without taking due permission from Ahmedabad police. The gallery organised the event Blues And All That Jazz–a music festival, along with a farmers market on January 7-8, 2023. The entry fees of the event was Rs 600 per head.
The programme, titled Blues And All That Jazz, was held near Shashwat Bungalows on SG Highway. The police commissioner asked the local police to investigate and act against such events, but no action was taken by the Vastrapur Police, in whose jurisdiction the event was organised.
The organiser had set up food stalls without police or municipality permission. The Vastrapur police detained one of the managers of the event , but he was allowed to go after a senior police officer intervened.
Purva Damani, founder of 079 Stories told Vibes Of India that no police action was taken against the event. “Our owner will call you to clarify,” said Damani.
Meanwhile, police inspector JK Dangar from Vastrapur Police Station said, “The event organiser was questioned. He was later allowed to go.” Dangar did not specify why the event organisers were let off, not did he reveal the name of the police officer who intervened in this case.
There are many such amphitheatres and private spaces in Ahmedabad stretching from SG Highway to Navrangpura and University area where events are held without permission. These programmes are widely circulated on social media, but the police turn a blind eye to them.
Purva Damani is the founder of an art gallery ‘079 stories and is paired by artistsKhushnu& Sonke Hoof.
