Ahmedabad Airport is planning to undertake repair of the runway during the day hours from November to March. This will cause the runways to remain closed from 9 am to 6 pm, which has been approved by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). For this, the Ahmedabad Airport management has announced a ‘NOTAM’, which are the notice distributed by the means of telecommunication containing information concerning the establishment, condition or change in any aeronautical facility, service, procedure or hazard, the timely knowledge of which is essential to personnel concerned with flight operations.
The repair will affect around 30 or possibly more flights at Ahmedabad on daily basis, causing rescheduling or cancellation of many flights. The resurfacing of the entire 3,300-metre runway of the airport will be done in one go which will take five months. This will create discomfort to the travelers and moreover, any VVIP movement will be given priority clearance for take-offs and landing. Presently, it handles around 18,000 passengers, with more than 120 daily flights take off and land at the Ahmedabad airport daily.
Earlier, Adani Group started resurfacing the runway soon after it took over the management of Ahmedabad airport. This cause the runway to be temporarily closed at that time for eight hours.
Keeping the resurfacing of the runway in view, all airlines will have to change their schedules and operate flights only before 9 in the morning and 6 in the evening.
