Aiming to ensure that the annual rathyatra of Lord Jagannath passes off peacefully in an atmosphere of communal amity, a team of women IPS officers for the first time went door-to-door in the walled city areas of Ahmedabad meeting and chatting up with women.
Even as the city police has been on its toes with continuous patrolling for the 145th rathyatra to be taken out on July 1 and the peace committees have been holding meetings to ensure that the procession that passes through sensitive areas of Ahmedabad with mixed neighbourhoods, women were never being involved in the process.
The team of women IPS officers chatted with women in various areas on the rathyatra’s route and appealed them to ensure their children did not get waylaid by disruptive elements and indulge in violence.
Joint Commissioner of Police of Sector-1 Rajendra Asari told Vibes of India that five women IPS officers went house to house and appealed to women to help cooperate in maintaining peace and harmony during the rathyatra as well as guide their children not to indulge in any violence.
Asari says until now only the members of the peace committees and socially prominent persons used to hold meetings to ensure the yatra passes off peacefully but this is the first time that women IPS officers contacted women to ensure their cooperation in maintenance of law and order. This is a twin effort of policing as well as a joint effort of overseeing the yatra hand in hand with the common people, especially women.
Accordingly, a team of officers comprising Bhakti Thaker, Bharati Pandya, Bina Desai interacted with women in the Shahpur area, while Laveena Sinha and Kanan Desai went around in the Karanj area, even as scores of people gathered to see the women IPS officers in their locality.
