As the days pass more horrific details are emerging in the case of the murder of 27-year-old Shraddha whose dead body was cut into 35 pieces and kept in a fridge by her live-in partner Aftab Amin Poonawala.
Dubbed the ‘Butcher’, Aftab strangled Shraddha to death about six months ago. He then cut the body into 35 pieces with a sharp weapon and then bought a new fridge and put the pieces of the body in it. Every night, he would leave his residence around 2 am to dispose of the body pieces in the nearby forest. This went on for 18 days.
After committing the crime, he had already started dating another girl who he met on the dating app Bumble. Incidentally, he had met Shraddha on the same app. Aftab allegedly spent time with another girl in the same room where Shraddha’s body cut into pieces was kept in the fridge.
Delhi Police sources said Aftab killed Shraddha because she was insisting on marrying him. He relied on many crime shows and Hollywood web series to arrive at how to kill Shraddha and dispose of her body. He also spent hours on the internet trying to know what to do to escape from the police after the murder.
Shraddha and Aftab both worked together in a call center in Mumbai where they fell in love. As Shraddha’s parents did not approve of Aftab, they eloped and moved to Delhi. They rented a house in Chhattarpur area of Delhi. On May 18, they had a fight after which Aftab lost his temper and strangled Shraddha to death.
When Shraddha’s social media updates stopped appearing, her father Vikas Madan Walker reached Delhi and made every effort to trace his daughter, but in vain. Finally, he sought help from the Delhi Police. On November 8, Shraddha’s father filed an FIR of his daughter’s disappearance.
Acting on a tip-off, the police detained Aftab. During police interrogation, the accused revealed that he had killed Shraddha six months ago in the month of May.
