Adani Green Energy Secures 1,250 MW Hydro Storage Project in UP

| Updated: February 28, 2025 15:28

Adani Green Energy Limited (AGEL) on Tuesday received a Letter of Award (LOA) from Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) for 1,250 MW of energy storage capacity from Pumped Hydro Storage Projects (PSP).

The project, named Panaura PSP, will be located in the Sonbhadra district of Uttar Pradesh and is expected to be completed within six years. It includes a minimum operational commitment of 40 years.

“India’s clean energy goals require large utility-scale storage projects to integrate renewable energy into the grid and ensure round-the-clock power supply,” the statement read.

In line with this objective, AGEL has expanded its portfolio to include energy storage solutions alongside its existing solar, wind, and hybrid projects. The company aims to add over 5 GW of hydro PSP capacity by 2030.

AGEL has already commenced construction of several hydro pumped storage projects, including a 500 MW facility at Chitravathi River in Andhra Pradesh, a 1,500 MW project at Tarali in Maharashtra, and an 1,800 MW development at Gandikota in Andhra Pradesh.

Hydro PSPs are considered cost-effective, scalable, and mature technologies for energy storage. They utilise electricity generated from solar power during the day to pump water, which is then used to meet peak energy demand at night through sustainable sources.

Hydro PSPs offer multiple benefits, including grid stability, peak shaving, and flexibility in energy management. They also provide frequency regulation and reserve generation, contributing to a more robust and resilient energy infrastructure. As one of the cleanest and safest energy storage technologies, PSPs play a critical role in supporting India’s renewable energy transition.

AGEL develops, owns, and operates large-scale renewable energy plants, including solar, wind, hybrid, and hydro pumped storage projects.

It currently operates an 11.9 GW renewable energy portfolio across 12 states, making it the largest renewable energy company in India.
