The much-awaited sequel to James Cameron’s 2009’s sci-fi screen epic Avatar (2009), Avatar 2 may see a December 2022 release. The date, industry insiders say, was recently fixed as December 16.
The sequel was earlier supposed to release in December 2021 but was pushed back due to the COVID pandemic.
Cameron’s Avatar was one of the biggest-grossing films of all time, raking in Rs 284.72 crores ($2.8bn). The film had bagged Academy Awards for the Best Cinematography and Best Production Design. The Avatar franchise is said to comprise three more films — with a third, fourth and fifth sequel that might release by 2028.
Apart from his magnum opus Avatar, Cameron is best-known for screen epics like Terminator (1984), Terminator 2: The Judgment Day (1991) and Titanic (1997). He has donned the screenplay writer’s cap for Avatar 2 with Josh Freidman, along with his directing duties. The film has been produced by Cameron and Jon Landau.
The filming of this sequel began in Sept 2017, with a budget of around $250 million. Russell Carpenter will be the cinematographer of the sequel, while the background score is by Simon Franglen. 20th Century Studios will be the film’s distributors.
