The Maharashtra forest department will send 13 captive elephants from Gadchiroli camp to a Reliance Industries Limited setup called Greens Zoological Rescue and Rehabilitation Kingdom in Jamnagar, Gujarat. This setup will prove to be one of the biggest zoos in the world, spread over 250 acres of land. As per Sunil Limaye, the Principal Conservator of Forests, there were 16 elephants in the camp and on the requests of the locals 13 would be sent to Jamnagar and three would be kept in the camp.
The Maharashtra forest department recently granted permission from the Project Elephant division of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change to the Reliance Industries Setup. These elephants would be shifted to Jamnagar in two groups one group is likely to be shifted this month itself. The forest department has also started looking for more animals for Reliance’s Rescue Centre In Jamnagar. All the elephants from Gadchiroli are not trained and are likely to attract more tourists. Reliance’s Radhe Krishna Elephant welfare to shift the animals. In 2020, 12 leopards were shifted to this zoo after they attacked humans. This plan was approved on the 12th of February 2019.
