Gujarat recorded 548 new Covid cases, one death and 19 Omicron infections in the last 24 hours, as against 394 positive cases, one death and five Omicron infections yesterday. Taking into account today’s figures, the state has seen a 39% rise in the Covid infection in a day, a substantial drop from yesterday’s 93% rise.
Yet again, Ahmedabad was the biggest contributor with 265 cases as against yesterday’s 178 cases – a rise of 48%.
The other major contributor includes Surat (72), Vadodara (34), Anand (23) and Kheda (21), and Rajkot (20). The one death recorded was in Porbandar.
With today’s update, the state’s active Covid tally stands at 1,902, while 11 patients are on ventilators. The total number of deaths since the start of the pandemic has reached 10,116.
Ahmedabad announced two more micro-containment zones in the city, taking the total number to 11. The latest micro-containment zones are in the two localities of the South and North-West zones.
On the Omicron front, eight new patients have been identified from Ahmedabad, whereas Vadodara, Surat and Anand recorded three six and two patients respectively. The total number of Omicron patients since the arrival of heavily mutated variant stands at 97, of which 41 have been discharged. The active Omicron tally in the state is 56. Of the new 19 new Omicron detections, only four had travel history, indicating local transmission.
India reported 9,195 new coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, according to the health ministry. The active caseload of the country now stands at 77,002. Omicron cases have risen to 781 and at least 241 have recovered, the ministry has said.
Meanwhile, the WHO warned on Tuesday that the Omicron variant could lead to overwhelmed healthcare systems.
