Gujarat Witnesses Spike In Covid-19 Cases, Police Enforce Stricter Curbs

| Updated: December 29, 2021 15:06

As the total number of active Covid-19 cases in Gujarat touched 1,420 on Tuesday, the Gujarat police have pulled up its act to enforce pandemic norms, like mask-wearing, strictly.

The total number of active cases in Ahmedabad city is now 178.

An advisory circular sent to all police commissioners and district police chiefs asked the forces to take up a mask distribution drive. Word has been circulated among the personnel to take the help of municipal corporations, local bodies and NGOs in the mass distribution of masks.

The advisory stated: “For the next 10 days, focus on the massive distribution of masks. Get in touch with municipal corporations, DMs, DHOs, local NGOs and other socially active entities to source masks and arrange for distribution. Please ensure that this is done in all police stations”.

Sources said that since the third wave of the pandemic now seems very likely, the police have been directed to strict action against people violating Covid-19 protocol.

“Local police have to ensure a visit to a containment zone at least once a day. Officials have been directed by the health department to ensure that no violations take place in micro-containment zones,” said a police source.

Gujarat is now under a night curfew from 11pm to 5am. Those violating the curfew and moving about without a valid reason are likely to face major consequences.
