Record Number Of Complaints Against E-Commerce Platforms, Minister Informs The Upper House

Maharashtra has reported the highest number of complaints against e-commerce companies followed by Uttar Pradesh and Delhi.

The Union Minister of State for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Ashwini Kumar Choubey informed Rajya Sabha that a total of 5,12,919 complaints against e-commerce platforms has been registered in the National Consumer Helpline from April 2019 to November, 2021.

It is clearly stated under Consumer Protection Rule5(3)(e) that every marketplace e-commerce entity is required to provide in a clear and accessible manner, display prominently to its users at an appropriate place on its platform, all information provided to it by sellers and it is mandated that name, contact number and designation of a grievance officer for consumer grievance redressal mechanism is accessible to consumers while purchasing goods and services on the platform.

CCPA on October 1, 2021 issued an advisory to industry associations requesting them to display redressal mechanisms prominently on their platforms.

Gujarat has reported 26,724 complaints, while Bihar reported 24,177complaints against e-commerce platforms.
