HC Order Slighted By Local PS And Embassy

| Updated: December 15, 2021 08:00

In what is turning to be a case of bureaucratic arm-twisting, the Indian Embassy in Canada and the Gujarat HC have locked horns over issuing Permanent Residence (PR) for a Gandhinagar resident.

The case started in 2016 when the woman started the immigration process to move to Canada. In accordance with norms, a NOC or no-objection certificate was required from the local police station. Thereon, began her three-pronged tryst with the Indian Embassy in Canada and Regional Passport Office and the local PS. Matters got stuck at the police station because her in-laws submitted a written application seeking cancellation of any NOC. In absence of any criminal antecedent of the woman, the police stand questioned their stand in delaying her paperwork.

Exasperated, the woman, approached the state High Court to implead her case with the Indian Embassy in Canada. On studying the merit of her case, the court, in early December, directed the RPO and the Embassy to expedite her immigration within 15 days.
However, both agencies refused to comply and the complainant has now filed a contempt of court petition.
