The present Indian Standard specification for sizing and fitting of footwear is based on European and French Standards.
The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) in consultation with the Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI), Chennai has initiated the project which will study the needs of the local population and define proportions and rules. This will provide well-fitted and healthy footwear.
The project will include statistical analysis, scientific study of the measurements, development of an Indian foot sizing system which will include foot bio-mechanics and gait study, material identification, fabrication development of design patterns, and comfort parameters which will be generation-specific.
The department has allocated Rs 10.80 crore for the project. This project is important as footwear for children, youngsters and adults are demography dependent.
The government saw the need for a standard specification as variations due to region, gender, age, health conditions require a thorough study.
