Corona Variant Omicron Causes Major Worry, Reinfects The Previously Infected

| Updated: December 4, 2021 19:26

Gujarat registered it’s first Omicron infection today, bringing the tally to three in India as per official admission. A 72-year-old man from Morkanda village in Jamnagar District, returning from Zimbabwe was found infected with the Omicron variant of Covid19 virus.

The new strain of continuously mutating nasty virus which had brought life on the whole world to almost standstill was identified by the brilliant scientists and researchers in South Africa. Named as Omicron after a letter in the Greek alphabet, the new strain has shaken the world once again for various reasons.

One of them is, Omicron shows a high rate of reinfection in people who already had the coronavirus. As believed earlier that people once infected had little chance to get reinfected does not appear to hold true for the new variant. This makes it very dangerous with it’s possible rippling effect across the globe.  Past infection was considered a layer of defence against Corona, but with new revelation, humanity has every reason to worry.

Considered by far the most dominant form the virus is the most contagious one so far. People have little immunity against it so, the spread is very fast. So far, Omicron is detected in 25 countries on six continents, and if experts are to be believed, it has the potential to reach every corner on earth. It effectively shatters all hopes the world would have been harbouring for recovery after being thoroughly thrashed during two years of the pandemic.

Unlike earlier Beta and Delta variants, the Omicron registers a sharp spike in coronavirus infected cases indicating that the virus is attacking previously infected persons also. Scientists were comforted with the fact that the immunity gained from a coronavirus infection had about 250 million recovered worldwide, however with the emergence of Omicron it calls for further research.
