Cyclone ‘Jawad’ is set to hit off the Andhra–south Odisha coast by today with wind speeds up to 90-100 kmph and heavy rain. On Sunday, Puri will be the likely site for the landfall of this storm which is expected to intensify into an acute cyclone for more than five hours on Saturday,
National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and other central and state agencies have already been kept in readiness for the releif and rescue work. The cyclone Jawad, will move north, north-eastword towards orissa once it hits the coast finally having landfall at Puri. The whole region will witness heavy to very heavy rainfall.
However, the India Meteriological Department has said that Jawad is expected to be much less intense than other major cyclones the region has witnessed in the past like Titli, Phailin and Hudhud in Octobers of 2018, 2013 and 2014 respectively on Fani in May 2019. National Crisis Management Committee is keeping an eye on the preparedness of the state and central agencies. Cyclone shelters are prepared and evacuation of people from low lying areas is completed.
NDRF has deployed 46 teams by keeping another 18 in readiness. All teams are equipped with 30 members each and the equipments necessary for relief and rescue operations. Army and Navy is laso alerted and the states have been informed to ensure functioning of regular Covid Hospitals.
