Resident from Ghodasar was duped of Rs 2.85 lakh by a fraudster posing as a gynaecologist from Spain. He cheated the women out of her money on the promises of providing medicines to treat her gynaecological concerns.

Priti Mistry, 36, filed a complaint with the Cyber Crime police on Tuesday. In the complaint, she informed that the accused identified himself as Cedric Lawrence from Spain and sent her a friend’s request on an online social media platform on December 8 last year.

Lawrence claimed to be a gynaecologist who was working with a government hospital in Spain. She said that she believed him and discussed various gynaecological issues with him. And Lawrence would often give her advices on how to deal with the issues.

She further informed that she had sent her medical reports to Lawrence following this, he told her that he was sending some medicines to cure her illness. On December 21, 2020, she received a call from the courier company asking her to pay Rs 36,000 to claim the medicine parcel from Spain.

“I told him that I would not receive the parcel. Lawrence then called and pleaded with me to accept the package. He told me that if the parcel is returned, he would lose his job with the hospital as he had sent the parcel without the nod of Spanish authorities,” she told the police.

Mistry paid the money via online transaction and told the courier employee to send the parcel. After a while, she got another call from the courier firm employee who told her to pay Rs 95,000 as they found $15,000 in cash inside the parcel. She then paid the money but received another call seeking Rs 1.55 lakh to convert the dollars into Indian currency.

I paid the money following which Lawrence and the delivery man went incommunicado,” she claimed.
Mistry then filed a complaint of cheating, breach of trust and criminal conspiracy along with charges of information technology act.
