The Gujarat government is planning to add 1200 seats by setting up 8 new medical colleges in the state within two years.
The new medical colleges will come up at Godhra, Porbandar and Morbi. The mandatory National Medical Commission inspection is completed. With 150 seats each, these new colleges will start in 2021-22 itself.
Another five medical colleges are planned in Jam Khambhaliya, Veraval, Botad, Navsari and Rajpipla. The aim of the Government is to establish at least one medical college per district in Gujarat.
Union Heath Ministry has said that 157 new medical colleges have been started in the country since 2014 at the cost of approximately Rs. 17700 crores.
There are 550 medical colleges in the country with out of which almost half (49%) are Government run whereas the remaining are self-financed or PPP model. In Gujarat there are 30 colleges with 5508 seats. With setting up of new colleges, there will be increase of about 21% in existing seat numbers.
