External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met his Mexican counterpart, Marcelo Ebrard, and President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, on Monday. Mr Jaishankar was received at the airport by Secretary of Finance and Public Credit Rogelio Ramírez de la O. This is the first time in 41 years that an external affairs minister from India has visited Mexico. He said that he intended to participate in the celebrations marking the 200th anniversary of Mexican Independence in a tweet.
“An External Affairs Minister’s visit from India after 41 years. Participating in celebrations of Mexico’s 200th anniversary of attaining Independence. We are working together in the UN Security Council. India is Mexico’s 9th largest trade partner,” said Mr Jaishankar on arriving in Mexico City.
On this occasion, Mr Jaishankar met the President of Mexico, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador. He conveyed greetings from PM and talked about governance and practices while discussing practical cooperation in pharmaceutical, ICT and energy fields.
“Thank President @lopezobrador_of Mexico for receiving me today. Conveyed greetings of PM @narendramodi. An open conversation on our governance priorities and practices. Great scope for exchange of experiences and best practices,” tweeted Mr Jaishankar.
Mr Jaishankar met with Mexican Foreign Minister, Marcelo Ebrard. They discussed collaboration in different areas such as political cooperation, trade and investment, space and scientific potential, cultural exchanges and consular issues.
The tweet by Mr Jaishankar read, “Concluded a comprehensive discussion with FM @m_ebrard of Mexico. Reviewed our political cooperation, trade and investment, space and scientific potential, cultural exchanges and consular issues. Shared perspectives on governance challenges and global narratives.”
As part of the celebrations, Mexico also launched an exhibition, “La Grande- za de Mexico” in the presence of foreign dignitaries. The exhibition is meant to showcase historical and cultural artefacts. On the anniversary of Mexican Independence, Mr Jaishankar visited the Mahatma Gandhi statue situated in Mexico City.
Mr Jaishankar tweeted, “Attended the Grandeur of Mexico exhibition on the return of heritage. Pleasure to meet First Lady @BeatrizGMuller, Foreign Minister @m_ebrard and Defence Minister @Luis_C_Sandoval.”
Mr Jaishankar met with the first lady of Mexico, Beatriz Gutiérrez Müller and Defence Minister, Luis Cresencio Sandoval González. He also met with dignitaries of other foreign countries, First Lady Tamara Vučić of Siberia and FM Nikola Selaković, Belize PM Johnny Briceño and FM Eamon Courtenay, Bangladesh MoS for Foreign Affairs Md. Shahriar Alam.
