A gang of the so-called upper caste stripped a Dalit man, thrashed and paraded him naked in Sabarkantha district for allegedly having an affair with a married woman. The police learned about the incident, which happened on March 11 in Vadol village, close to Idar town in Sabarkantha, after a video went viral.
“…No medico-legal case was filed at that time since the victim (out of fear) had lied to the doctors that he sustained the injuries after falling down the stairs,” said Sabarkantha SP Vijay Patel. The victim was so brutally assaulted that he had to be admitted to a hospital.
Fifteen people were booked under the Atrocity Act and nine of them were detained by Thursday evening, Idar Police Inspector Chetan Rathod confirmed.
According to a report, they were booked under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) sections 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt), 137(2) (kidnapping), 189(2) (unlawful assembly), 191(2) (rioting), 190 (collective liability for unlawful assembly), 310(2) (dacoity), 352 (insult with intention to breach the peace) and 351(3) (criminal intimidation) besides under sections of the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
The 32-year-old complainant has stated in the FIR that he makes a living by driving construction workers to their labour sites. According to the authorities, he met the woman on one of these sites. They have mentioned that the complainant is married and has two kids. He was grading potatoes in a cold storage facility on March 11. He left the building at approximately 11 pm to prepare tea.
According to the complainant, the primary accused and the woman’s husband, Sanjay Ishwar Thakor, arrived at the scene around this time with some people. He fled tthe scene out of fear, but the accused confronted him, allegedly mauled and assaulted him.
After dragging him close to a temple, the accused showed him a purported photo of the complainant and Sanjay’s wife.
According to the FIR, the accused then stripped the complainant, paraded him naked, and took him to a remote location. The complainant told police that the accused forced the victim to sign a document before releasing him.
The complainant drove his car back to his village after being taken to a private hospital for treatment by his friends and relatives.
Police approached the victim after allegedly finding a video of the abuse and asked him to lodge a complaint.
