Surat’s Abhivyakti Festival Celebrates Art with Theatre and Music on Day 2

| Updated: March 2, 2025 13:26

The third edition of “Abhivyakti – The City Arts Project” featured two performances on Sunday at the Sanjeev Kumar Auditorium in Hazira. Organised by UNM Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Torrent Group’s Mehta Family, the event aimed to provide emerging artists with a platform while ensuring free and accessible cultural experiences.

At 8:00 pm, an experimental puppet theatre act, “Charan Kanya,” was presented by Rahul Kanthariya.

Kanthariya, who has studied theatre and fine arts since 2009, drew inspiration from Zaverchand Meghani’s literary work of the same name.

“Through this performance, I wanted to honour Meghani’s immortal work while bridging the gap between traditional literature and experimental theatre,” he said. His interpretation incorporated innovative expression and a broader artistic framework to bring new life to the classic work.

Following the theatre performance, Mukt Band presented a fusion rock act titled “The Palette of Time” at 9:30 pm. The independent music group was informally founded by Udit Bhavsar, Tarun Gagadecker, and Dhaval Yadav.

“We blend our passion and experiences to create a unique fusion of musical styles,” Bhavsar said.

The band, known for collaborating with unconventional artists across India, combined alternative rock with live folk elements.

“Our compositions aim to reflect the emotions and experiences of both humans and nature,” Gagadecker added. Their performance explored the connection between changing seasons and human emotions through atmospheric soundscapes, offering the audience an immersive experience.

“On the Abhivyakti stage, we wanted to bring the essence of the seasons to life through sound,” Yadav noted.

Since its inception in Ahmedabad in 2018, Abhivyakti has expanded to multiple cities in Gujarat, including Vadodara, Rajkot, and Surat. To date, 1,979 artists from across India have participated in the festival, with over 619,000 people attending.
