Security forces on Sunday killed 31 Naxalites in an encounter in Bijapur district, police said. Two security personnel were also killed, while two others sustained injuries.
The encounter took place in a forest within Indravati National Park in the morning when a joint team of security personnel launched an anti-Naxalite operation, Inspector General of Police, Bastar Range, Sundarraj P said.
“Thirty-one Naxalites have been killed in the encounter,” he stated. A large cache of weapons and explosives was recovered from the site.
Among the deceased security personnel, one belonged to the District Reserve Guard, while the other was from the Special Task Force. Two injured personnel, who are reported to be out of danger, were airlifted for further medical treatment.
Reinforcement teams were dispatched to the area, and a search operation was ongoing, Sundarraj P added.
With this incident, 81 Naxalites have been killed in separate encounters across the state this year, 65 of them in the Bastar division, which includes seven districts, including Bijapur.
According to police records, 219 Naxalites were killed in encounters in Chhattisgarh last year.
